This is bad news for all the small kosher grocers from DC to Boston. Baltimore Kosher has done wholesale kosher on the East Coast for years. I talked to the owner (a great, terrifically honest guy) for a while about it. They weren't making ends meet. Said that while there may be room for niche specialty small scale kosher meat businesses, the commodity businesses (kosher and non) have all been taken over by the Fast Food Nation huge ones in TX and CO. Small and mid-size East Coast places are history. This is a sad story. It makes me feel like our goals of making a difference in the world are fast being swallowed up by the big industrial corporations and forcing us to only serving the small few niche. This swallowing has been going on for 50 years already, so it will take a lot to slow down. If it is possible at all.
